Where Heritage Is Preserved And Futures Are Made.
This is not just a phrase, but a way of life for Legacy Oaks Farm. With lineage in Granville County dating back to the late 1700’s, our farm and associated farmhouse have been traced to the Hicks family dating back to the early 1900’s. Deed records show the original four-room farmhouse, which is still present today, was completed in 1923. We have recently been recognized as a North Carolina Century Farm with 100 Years of Continuous Agricultural Heritage by the N.C. State Fair and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Tobacco was the key crop providing financial support for the family and farm. Many outbuildings still exist on the property that were once flue-cured tobacco barns, strip house (where tobacco leaves were removed from tobacco sticks before being sold), workshop, smokehouse, corn crib, and stable. Over the generations, tenant farmers moved onto the property bringing different crops to the land. After the farming of tobacco was abandoned and the land experienced a period of dormancy, it was transitioned to a farm with Black Angus.
To speak of the land without speaking to those tending it would be only half the story. The first two generations of Hicks’ ownership were tobacco farmers. The third generation, Wayne Hicks, took a different turn with tobacco by entering the corporate arena via Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. Wayne had a successful professional career spanning 35 years advocating for and processing and selling tobacco into worldwide markets. After retirement, he and Peggy settled back to the farmstead. They performed extensive renovations to the house, outbuildings, and land – including the introduction of the Black Angus cattle. The Black Angus have been on the property since the early 2010’s. The sales of feeder calves and hay produced from the fields was a supplementary income to offset the farm’s maintenance expenses. In early 2022, Steve and I purchased the house and some acreage from Wayne and Peggy to officially become the fourth generation tending the land. As the fourth-generation farmers on the property, we are now working to scale up our production and provide pasture-raised beef to the local communities. To do this, we are implementing new, innovative means to maximize the land’s capabilities and efficiencies.
Our goal at Legacy Oaks Farm is to preserve the property, its story, and sustainability for generations to come, while providing naturally-raised food to our communities. We are proud to be stewards of this family farm,

The Black Angus herd was introduced to the farm in 2012, when ‘Bessie’ was purchased from a local cattle auction. The herd has continuously grown through the support of additional acquisitions, including cows and bulls. Furthering our commitment to yielding the highest quality beef, we continue to refine our Black Angus genetics through AI with top-ranked American Angus Association bulls. We are also introducing new, innovative means to maximize the land’s capabilities and efficiencies, furthering our sustainability goal – rotational grazing, bale processing, forage management.
Animal welfare is a top priority for Legacy Oaks Farm, LLC as we believe a happy, healthy animal yields the best quality meat. Our pasture-based practices include continuous access to forage with multiple watering stations located throughout the grounds as well as free-choice mineral stations. The cattle also have the benefit of multiple shade structures as they’re grazing or resting and are never confined. Our commitment to animal welfare means we raise our cattle without any added hormones or daily antibiotic usage.
